2.3. VM support

XenServer supports Virtual Machines that run the following operating systems:

2.3.1. Microsoft Windows

Windows VMs can be created only on XenServer Hosts equipped with Intel VT-enabled or AMD-V CPUs. All Windows VMs are created via installing the operating system from either the Microsoft installation media in the XenServer Host physical CD/DVD-ROM drive or a network-accessible ISO image to the appropriate Template.

64-bit VMs

  • Windows Server 2003 Standard/Enterprise/Datacenter SP2
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP2

32-bit VMs

  • Windows 2000 SP4
  • Windows XP SP2
  • Windows Server 2003 Web/Standard/Enterprise/Datacenter SP0, SP1, SP2, R2
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP0, SP1, SP2, R2

2.3.2. Linux

Linux VMs are created via one of three basic methods:

  • installing the operating system from a network-accessible vendor media repository to the appropriate Template
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.1, 4.4, and 4.5
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
    • CentOS 4.5
    • CentOS 5.0
  • using a Template that contains a complete pre-installed operating system

    • Debian 3.1 (Sarge)
    • Debian 4.0 (Etch)
  • converting an existing physical instance using the P2V tool

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.5, 3.6, 3.7
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP2, SP3
